Leaders cutting across party lines have opposed the Kerala Government’s move to construct a check dam across the Silanthi river in Idukki district. They have requested the Centre not to permit the construction of the dam. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K.Stalin has written to the Kerala Government to halt the construction until the issue is resolved to maintain the true spirit of friendship between the States. He has also alleged that no documents relating to the construction have been provided either to the Tamil Nadu Government or to the Cauvery management authority.
Meanwhile, Opposition leader of Tamil Nadu, K.Palanisamy has criticised the ruling DMK of being lethargic to the needs of the farmers. He also accused the ruling dispensation in Kerala of attempting to obstruct the flow of water to the Amaravathi dam in Tamil Nadu.
River Silanthi is the irrigation source for lakhs of acres of fertile agricultural lands in Karur and Tirupur districts in Tamil Nadu.
