Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay has approved an order allowing theatres across the state to screen five shows per day for seven days from the release date of new Tamil films. The decision follows a meeting on May 16, 2026, where representatives of the film industry requested the extension.
Previously, under Rule 14-A of the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres were permitted to screen four shows daily, with an additional show allowed only on festival days or public holidays. With the new amendment, theatres can now run five shows per day during the first week of a film’s release without seeking separate permission from the government or licensing authorities.
The order also extends to weekends, public holidays, and local festivals, ensuring theatres can maximize screenings during peak demand. The Chief Minister’s office emphasized that this move was made after detailed discussions with industry representatives to support the growth of Tamil cinema.
Earlier, CM Vijay congratulated the team of Karuppu starring Suriya and Trisha_Krishnan for its strong box office performance following its May 15 release.
