jayalalitha newTamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa has asked the Centre to resume power generation in the first unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant immediately. The nuclear plant started commercial operations on 31st December last year. The host state has been allocated 563 Mega Watt out of its total capacity of 1,000 MW.

However, it has been shut down for customary maintenance operations for the past ninety days. Ms Jayalalithaa has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today in which she has said the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited is yet to clearly indicate when the the nuclear installation would recommence power generation.

She has pointed out that wind power generation in the state is set to go down sharply as the wind season is drawing to a close and so Kudankulam nuclear power generation is crucial to meet the needs. She has also sought to expedite the commercial operation of the Second Unit in the same premises, which is undergoing final stages of commissioning.
