A tragic ammonia gas leak at a seafood export facility in Periyapalayam, Tamil Nadu, has resulted in at least seven fatalities and left over 70 workers affected. Officials indicate that the death toll could increase as ongoing rescue and medical efforts continue.
In response to the crisis, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), paired with specialized Chemical, Biological, and Nuclear (CBRN) response teams, immediately deployed to the site. They are currently executing rescue operations and working to safely contain the hazardous leak under strict safety protocols.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered a high-level inquiry into the disaster, mandating a three-member committee to investigate and submit a detailed report within 24 hours. Emphasizing strict accountability, the Chief Minister stated that those responsible for the lapse would face justice. Additionally, he announced an ex-gratia payment of two lakh rupees for the families of each deceased victim.
