External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today successfully underwent a kidney transplant at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS in New Delhi.
The surgery was conducted by a team of doctors, including AIIMS Director Dr. MC Mishra. In a statement, AIIMS said the operations on both the voluntary Kidney Donor and Mrs. Swaraj were smooth.
Both the patients have been shifted to Intensive Care Unit in the cardiothoracic Centre for close monitoring of post-operative recuperation.
According to doctors, the 64 year old Minister has been suffering from diabetes for quite a long time. After the kidney failure diagnosis, she was put on maintenance dialysis.
