Strong Tremors were felt in north eastern and eastern parts of India after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck near India-Myanmar border around 04.35 am today. In Manipur, two persons died while five others got injured in the high intensity earthquake. According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the epicentre of the quake was located at Tamenglong district of Manipur. Reports available from Manipur University Seismological Observatory said, epicenter of the earthquake was at Nungba area at a distance of 35 kilometre and at 39 kilometre depth towards North-West from Imphal.
The earthquake was also felt in parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal and Bihar. No reports of damages have been received from these areas so far. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today spoke to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh who is currently in Assam, asking that all steps be taken to provide any necessary relief to those affected. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is continuously monitoring the situation in the Northeast due to the earthquake. Mr. Modi spoke to Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki. Prime Minister also had a telephone conversation with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in this regard. In a tweet, Office of the Prime Minister, PMO said that NDRF team has been instructed to move from Guwahati to the areas affected by the earthquake.
