The situation in the violence-affected Kandy district has improved as no untoward incident has been reported since last night.The curfew was relaxed during daytime but will continue during the night.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority said, the situation was fast returning to normal and tourists could resume their travel plans to Kandy.

Earlier several shops and establishments were burnt in violence targeted at minority Muslim community.

Three people have died in the violence that began on Sunday and which led to an emergency in the country.

Meanwhile, the country got a new law and order minister as Ranjith Bandara was sworn in to the post today.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe was given the charge of ministry in cabinet reshuffle carried out last Sunday.

Prime Minister’s party had suggested the name of former Army General Sarath Fonseka for the post but it was not agreed upon by President.
