Sri Lanka: Night curfew to continue in riots hit areas

AGENCIES

Night curfew will continue in affected areas even as there has been no reports of any violence since yesterday. Police Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said that curfew will be re-enforced in Gampaha police division and North Western Province from 7.00 p.m. tonight to 4.00 a.m. tomorrow.

There was night curfew countrywide for last two days following violence targeting Muslims. Police said that 78 suspects in the North Western Province have been arrested and remanded for inciting violence against Muslim minorities in which dozens of shops and houses were damaged. Meanwhile, a defence spokesman has said that an investigation has been launched in a video clip which showed an armed forces personnel helping the rioters carry out the attacks.

Sri Lanka Air Force has said it will deploy helicopters day and night to capture the perpetrators of disruptive activities in the affected areas as well as in other parts of the country. Air Force Spokesman said that people who are engaging in disruptive activities, will be photographed from air to use them as evidence against the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, security remains tight all over the country in wake of Vesak celebrations beginning today. Sri Lanka has been tense since Easter Sunday attacks in which nine suicide bombers targeted churches and hotels in the country killing over 250 people including 45 foreigners.
