In Sri Lanka, the Election Commission has announced the timelines for submission of nominations for the Local Government Elections on the island. The poll body said that the nominations will be accepted from March 17 until 12 noon on March 20.
Political parties and independent groups intending to contest are required to submit their nominations within this period. The dates of the polling and counting are yet to be announced.
The local government elections, to elect members to over 8700 seats in 340 local councils, have been postponed since 2022 due to the economic crisis. After the presidential and parliamentary elections held last year, the ruling NPP is confident of a good performance while the main opposition parties, the United National Party (UNP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) have agreed to contest the elections as a united front.
