South Korean President Moon Jae-in held landmark talks with a high-level delegation from North Korea at the presidential palace in Seoul. The two sides held talks for about three hours today, the day after the delegation arrived in South Korea for the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
The group includes Kim Yong Nam, who is the president of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, and Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of leader Kim Jong Un It is the first time that a relative of the North Korean leader has made an official visit to the South.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un invited the South’s President Moon Jae-in for a summit in Pyongyang. A spokesman for the South Korean President, Kim Eui-kyeom said in Seoul that North Korea’s Special envoy Kim Yo Jong delivered a personal letter from her brother Kim Jong Un, stating his desire to improve inter-Korean relations.
Moon did not immediately accept the offer, calling instead for efforts to “create the right conditions to realise” such a visit and urging Pyongyang to actively seek dialogue with the US, said the spokesman.
