Activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike at a private hospital in Gurugram last night in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh. Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, and senior leaders of the Apex Body of Leh Ladakh were also present at the hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged social activist Sonam Wangchuk to follow the doctors’ advice, resume his daily routine, and regain his previous weight at the earliest. In a social media post, the Prime Minister prayed to the Almighty for Mr Wangchuk’s good health.

Earlier, 65 Members of Parliament from different political parties had visited or signed letters urging him to end his fast. Mr Wangchuk said the decision was taken after prolonged negotiations on various conditions. He urged everyone to remain vigilant and ensure that no violence takes place anywhere.

Mr Wangchuk had begun his hunger strike on the 28th of last month, demanding reforms in the education system and accountability over paper leaks.

Meanwhile Sonam Wangchuk‘s wife, Gitanjali Angmo says, “Sonam Wangchuk had announced that he would continue his fast until the government gave a written assurance that no FIRs or legal action would be taken against students and protesters, and that any existing cases would be withdrawn. He continued his fast until the commitments were provided in writing late at night. The written assurance stated that no FIRs would be filed, no undue force would be used against protesters, compensation would be provided to the families of students who died by suicide over the NEET issue, and Parliament would discuss educational reforms and examination-related concerns. JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh met Sonam on behalf of the government… This has been a successful movement. The NEET paper leak was just a symptom of deeper systemic problems, which is why the movement received nationwide support. Following the written assurance, Sonam ended his fast yesterday. He is currently on a liquid diet and will gradually transition to semi-solid and solid food over the next few days.”
