sister_nirmalaSuperior General of Missionaries of Charity Sister Nirmala died in Kolkata early morning today after brief illness. She was 81 . Sister Nirmala took over the highest post in Missionaries of Charity after the death of Mother Teresa. She worked as Superior General till the year 2009. Sister Nirmala received Padmabibhusan award in the same year. Her body has been kept at the St. Pauls Church in Kolkata. A pall of gloom descended at the Mother House the Headquarters of Missionaries of Charity where mourners began to turn up soon after the news spread . Her body will be shifted to Mother House tomorrow for funeral.

Born in Ranchi to a Hindu parents, Nirmala Joshi  got education in Patna . Inspiring by the work of Mother Teresa Sister Nirmala joined in the Missionaries of Charity in 1976 and dedicated herself to the service of the poor till death.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sadness over the demise of Sister Nirmala. He said Sister Nirmala’s life was devoted to service, caring for the poor and underprivileged. In his message, Mr Modi said, deepest condolences to the Missionaries of Charity family on the passing away of Sister Nirmala.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has extended her condolences on the passing away of Sister Nirmala. In her message, Mrs Gandhi said Sister Nirmala will be deeply missed by millions whose lives she touched in service of humanity. Expressing sadness at the demise, party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi said Sister Nirmala carried forward Mother Teresa’s work with quiet dedication and dignity.

Congress has also condoled the death of Sister Nirmala. Party spokesperson Meem Afzal said in New Delhi that Sister Nirmala rendered great service to the nation and took the Mission forward. He expressed grief over the sad demise and hoped that Missionaries of Charity continue to carry forward the good work done by Mother Teresa and Sister Nirmala.

The West Bengal Chief Minster Miss Mamata Banerjee has condoled her death. In a tweet Miss Banerjee said that She saddened at the passing away of Sister Nirmala who headed Missionaries of Charity after Mother Teresa. Kolkata and whole world will miss her.
