At least 65 ppeopleave been killed and more than 80 injured when a crane collapsed in the Muslim holy city of Makkah. Saudi Arabia’s civil defence authority has confirmed 65 death.

“Our Consulate in Jeddah is monitoring situation in Makkah following tragic accident. We have recd reports that 9 Indian pilgrims are injured,” India’s Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.

Incident occurred when the crane fell on the Grand Mosque, the civil defence authority tweeted.
Few other details are available. Images from the scene showed part of a huge red crane had crashed through the roof of the mosque during the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage.

Thousands of people are expected to arrive in the Saudi city from all over the world later this month.
Saudi authorities began a major expansion of the site last year to cope with ever-growing numbers of worshippers.

Local media reports suggested that the accident occurred due to heavy rains the Kingdom. The governor of the Makkah region, the capital of which is Mecca, Prince Khalid al-Faisal has ordered the launch of an investigation into the causes of the accident.

The Masjid al-Haram, or Grand Mosque, in Makkah is Islam’s most sacred site and the destination for millions of Muslims undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage every year.
