The Supreme Court of India today refused to pass order on pleas filed against Cockroach Janta Party’s scheduled protest at Delhi’s India Gate on September 5.
According to Live Law, the apex court has issued a notice to Centre and Delhi Police on the plea.
The plea was moved by former Delhi Police officer Rajendra Singh who in his plea raised concern over law and order situation in the national capital that may arise due to the planned protest.
In his plea, Singh had sought to restrict large-scale protests in sensitive areas of the national capital without prior permission. His counsel, Advocate Ahmed, informed the court that organizers have not yet applied for permission. Highlighting the upcoming BRICS Summit in Delhi next week, Ahmed raised security concerns over demonstrations taking place while international media coverage is underway.
The matter was brought before top court’s bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana- which posted the matter to September 10, LiveLaw reported.
While hearing the plea the bench observed that that law and order was within the domain of the police, noting that the petitioner should approach the government and raise his concerns.
CJP Announces India Gate Protest
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) last week announced a nationwide call for a peaceful protest march in New Delhi on September 5, accusing the Government of India of failing to honour the commitments made to young people on July 25, following which nationwide youth protests were withdrawn.
According to a press release, the peaceful march on September 5 will begin at India Gate and proceed towards the New Delhi Police Headquarters. It will be led by the families of deceased NEET victims and victims of police brutality, with students, youth organisations and young citizens from across the country expected to join.
