Says State, Oppn failed in constitutional duty

SCThe Supreme Court today appointed Retd Justice Virendra Singh as new Lokayukta of Uttar Pradesh. The Apex Court invoked its constitutional power and appointed retired HC judge Virendra Singh as UP Lokayukta. The Court observed that the failure of constitutional functionaries to comply with the orders of the highest court of the land is deeply regretted and astonishing, It expressed displeasure that CM, leader of opposition and chief justice of high court failed to comply with its order.

The Supreme Court asked the list to be presented before the bench by 12.30 today and later gave its nod on Justice Virendra Singh’s name. The name of Justice (Retd) Virendra Singh, a native of western Uttar Pradesh, has been Judge of Allahabad High Court since 2009-2011. He superannuated in 2011.

Earlier in Lucknow, the selection panel of Lokayukta, comprising Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, leader of Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya and chief justice of Allahabad high court Justice DY Chandrachud could not reach on any consensus even second day today when it met at CM’s residence and has reportedly decided to meet in the evening again.
