The Supreme Court has directed release of jailed Sahara chief Subrata Roy on parole for four weeks to attend last rites of his mother who died today morning.
The court however said that he would be under protective custody of the police. The court also sought an assurance from Roy’s counsel Kapil Sibal that he will not try to escape or run away.
A bench comprising Chief Justice T S Thakur, Justices A R Dave and A K Sikri gave the direction on a plea of Roy. Besides Roy, the apex court also granted parole to one of the jailed Sahara director Ashok Roy Choudhary.
Roy has been in Tihar jail since March 2014 in relation with a long running dispute with market regulator SEBI.
