The fifth phase of Sagar Parikrama, which began from Mumbai yesterday, continued its journey to have numerous meet-and-greet interactive sessions between Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Parshottam Rupala, and the fishing community from Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district.

On the second day today, Mr. Rupala interacted with the fish farmers and fishermen at Veldur to share their experiences and discuss issues like standardization of rules and regulations related to fishing. The villagers apprised the minister about their mode of fish farming and quantum of income. Mr. Rupala assured them that critical gaps in the fisheries value chain will be eliminated by implementing schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojna and Kisan Credit Card.

Mr. Rupala continued his journey forward and interacted with about eight thousand fishermen and fish farmers from Mirkarwada and Mirya villages. The journey will continue towards the coastal state of Goa, where the minister will interact with the citizens of Vasco, Mormugao, and Canacona.

The Sagar Parikrama initiative has been devised as a policy tool to know and understand the issues of coastal areas and problems related to fishermen. The first four phases have brought massive changes in planning the development strategy for the holistic development of fishermen, keeping in mind the effects of climate change and the motto of sustainable development.
