RJD to make Custodial death a poll issue in Bihar

Our Correspondent / PATNA:

The alleged death of two people in police custody in Sitamarhi last week has turned into a major political controversy in the state with the RJD has decided to take the issue to the people during elections.

The RJD has also demanded that the erring cops be charged with murder and the next of kin of the two dead people get a compensation of Rs 50 lakh each and government jobs. Mohammad Gufran Ansari (30) and Mohammad Taslim (35) –died after they were allegedly subjected to third degree torture in police custody at Dumra police station in Sitamarhi district on March 7. The two, both residents of Ramdiha village under the Chakia police station area in East Champaran district, were detained for interrogation in connection with a motorbike loot and murder case.

Lashing out at the state government for the “barbaric” act of the police, RJD state president Ramchandra Purve demanded a probe into the death of Gufran and Taslim by a sitting judge of the high court. “Such a barbaric act of the police has never come to light earlier in the state,” Purve said, adding if the government failed to pay heed to the demands of the victims’ families, the party would intensify agitation and make the incident an issue in the ensuing Lok Sabha election.

He alleged that the matter was being hushed up by the ruling JD(U) for the obvious reason. “If the incident is investigated in a fair manner, the involvement of many leaders of the JD(U) will come to the fore, which the present dispensation will never allow to happen,” he said, adding that the role of the SPs of both East Champaran and Sitamarhi should be probed.
