Rajya Sabha has admitted CPI(M) MP Sitaram Yechury’s privilege motion against Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani for making some remarks during a debate on JNU row in the last session.
Sources said, Chairman Hamid Ansari has referred the matter to the committee headed by Deputy Chairman Prof. P.J. Kurien.
In the last session, Mr. Yechury had moved the motion against Ms Irani alleging that the Minister had levelled charges which suggested that he had made some comments denigrating goddess Durga.
Mr Yechury had claimed that there was no reference to anything of this nature during the discussion and termed the charges as baseless. The discussion was on JNU row related to alleged anti-national slogans and the suicide of a Hyderabad University student.
The Committee will examine the matter and if it finds there has been breach of privilege, it may make appropriate recommendations against the Minister.
