Hundreds of members of various pro-Liberation organisations, freedom fighters and socio-cultural organisations are protesting in Dhaka over BNP Chairperson’s Khaleda Zia controversial remark on the number of martrys during the 1971 Bangladesh, Liberation War.

Police swung into action to stop the protestors from gheraoing the former Prime Minister at her official residence in the capital. The protests follow criticism by ruling Awami League leaders including the Prime Minister’s ICT Adviser Wajed Joy who said people should protest Khaleda’s anti-Liberation remarks.

On December 21 Khaleda had disputed the official figure of 3 lakh martyrs during the War. Main pro-Liberation Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee President Shariar Kabir demanded an apology from the former Prime Minister to the nation. Khaleda’s controversial remark came a few days after Pakistan had denied they had committed any atrocities during the 1971 Liberation War.
