Bypoll Results Reshape Political Narrative

A Z NAWAB / Patna

In a major political upset, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has won the high-profile Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by nearly 19,000 votes in his first-ever electoral contest. The result marks the end of the BJP’s nearly three-decade dominance in the constituency and is being seen as a significant boost for Kishor ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.

Bankipur, long regarded as a BJP stronghold, fell vacant after BJP national president Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha. The bypoll quickly turned into one of the country’s most closely watched contests as Kishor entered active electoral politics after years as a political strategist. (News on Air)

The contest was triangular, featuring the BJP, Jan Suraaj Party and the RJD. Kishor maintained a steady lead throughout counting before sealing a comfortable victory, delivering a symbolic setback to the BJP in one of its safest urban seats.

Meanwhile, the BJP retained Gujarat’s Manjalpur Assembly seat, with Satish Patel defeating Congress candidate Bhikhabhai Rabari by more than 30,000 votes, continuing the party’s dominance in the Vadodara constituency.

In Madhya Pradesh’s Datia, counting trends showed Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh leading BJP’s Ashutosh Tiwari, though the final result was awaited at the time of the latest updates. The bypoll was necessitated after the disqualification of Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti following his conviction in a fraud case.

The July 30 bypolls in Bankipur, Datia and Manjalpur were viewed as an important political test for the BJP, Congress and the newly formed Jan Suraaj Party. While the BJP held on to Manjalpur, Kishor’s breakthrough victory in Bankipur has emerged as the headline result, potentially altering Bihar’s political equations ahead of the next Assembly election.
