Popular Malayalam actress Kalpana, who appeared in 300 films including recent superhit ‘Charlie’, passed away in Hyderabad following heart attack
.
In the death of Kalpana (51), the Malayalam film industry has lost a consummate actor. Whatever be the role – comic or tragic – she did justice to it. I have always been an admirer of her.

Whenever she appeared in reality shows as a judge or when she was interviewed on television, she came across as an admirable person.
Sophistry was not her forte. She was often blunt though her bluntness was tinged with humour.

Kalpana Ranjani was in Hyderabad for shooting a Telugu film and was scheduled to leave for Kerala later today. She was declared brought dead at a hospital around 7 am.

Malayalam actors K P A C Lalitha, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and Innocent, MP, expressed shock at the demise of the actress, who was best known for her comic roles in South Indian films.

Kalpana had received National award in the best supporting actress for her performance in ‘Thanichala Njan’ (2012).

Sister of actor Urvashi and Kalaranjini, Kalpana forayed into the Malayalam films as a child actor in ‘Vidarunne Mottukul’ in 1977. Among her other Malayalam hits are ‘Ennum Eppuzhum’, ‘Karnavar’, ‘Dolfins’, ‘Bangalore Days’ and ‘Spirit’.

‘Kakki Sattai’, ‘Idhaya Thiruda’, ‘Sathi Leelavathi’ and ‘Chinna Veedu’ are among her Tamil films.
