The Yunus-led interim government of Bangladesh has urged all political parties to take a clear stand on ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, calling her recent remarks “an existential threat” to democracy.
“It’s time for all parties to take a clear position regarding Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League,” said Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam at a policy dialogue at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka on Saturday.
He accused Hasina of branding July Uprising participants as “terrorists”. “Is she trying to return to power by declaring 180 million citizens as enemies?” he asked.
Quoting late legendary journalist Enayetullah Khan, he added, “Mujibur Rahman made 65 million collaborators; now his daughter calls 180 million people terrorists.”
Shafiqul reaffirmed that the national election will be held in the first half of February, stressing that political debates over the July Charter are part of “a healthy democratic process.” “If parties cannot agree, the interim government will take necessary decisions to ensure the election proceeds without uncertainty,” he said.
