Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that his government was committed to do whatever possible for the farmers. Intervening during a discussion in the Lok Sabha, Mr Modi said yesterday’s incident of a farmer committing suicide is very unfortunate. He said the problem of farmers old, widespread and government will accept all suggestions to prevent such types of incidents in future. Expressing his grief, the Prime minister said nothing is more valuable than human life.
Earlier the issue of farmer’s suicide at AAP rally in Delhi rocked both Houses of Parliament. Opposition members forced repeated adjournments in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the issue.
Prime Minister said, all should vow to work together and find a solution for the farmers ‘ problems.
Replying to a debate on the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Home Minister Rajnath Singh termed the incident as national shame and urged the parties not to politicize it but co-operate with the government to find out a solution of the problem faced by the farmers. He informed the House that when the farmer, Gajendra Singh, was trying to commit suicide, the police requested people who were gathered to stop applauding and raising slogans but they did not stop. He said that an FIR has been registered at the Parliament Street police station in this regard and case has been handed over to Crime Branch.
As soon as Lok Sabha met for the day, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge demanded suspension of the Question hour to discuss the farmer suicide issue. The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 12 PM.
The issue was also raised in the Rajya Sabha which faced adjournments on the opening day of the new session. The House witnessed repeated adjournments on the opposition demand for holding discussion on the issue. Several members had given notices for suspension of question hour and rest of the business to take up the discussion.The matter was raised by Trinamool Congress members and supported by other opposition parties including Samajwadi Party, Left and Congress party.
