Farmer’s suicide rocks both Houses of Parliament

Both the houses of Parliament resumed functioning after adjournments over yesterday’s farmer death issue and the Land Acquisition. The issue is now being discussed in the Parliament. BSP leader Mayawati and Janata Dal(U) leader Sharad Yadav expressed concern over the PARLIAMENTfarmers issue. Earlier today Opposition members forced repeated adjournments of the Upper House on the issue . The issues were raised on the opening day of the new session of the House. The House was adjourned for fifteen minutes amidst opposition uproar over Land Bill. The matter was raised by Trinamool Congress members and supported by other opposition parties including Samajwadi Party, Left and Congress party.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 12 PM. As soon as the House met for the day, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge demanded suspension of the Question hour to discuss the farmer suicide issue. Yesterday one farmer from Rajasthan committed suicide in Delhi during a rally. Mr Kharge said the Speaker should discuss the plight of farmers. Intervening, Parliamentary Affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu said the issue is very important and the government does not have any problem at all in discussing the issue.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said the issue can be discussed after the Question Hour. But the unrelenting opposition members including Congress and Samajwadi party trooped into the well of the House and shouted slogans. Amid the din, the Speaker adjourned the House till noon. Earlier, the CPI(M) members staged a walk out in the House.

Earlier, the Lok Sabha today condoled the death of former Odisha chief minister Janaki Ballav Patnaik and also people who lost their lives due to torrential rains and hailstorm in Bihar. As the House met for the day, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan paid tributes to late Mr Patnaik. A former union minister and three time chief minister of Odisha, Mr Patnaik was the member of the fifth and seventh Lok Sabha representing the Cuttack Parliamentary constituency.

Mr Patnaik also was the Assam Governor from 2009 till December 2014. Late Mr Patnaik was also a scholar of repute. The House also expressed grief for the death of people in Bihar. 65 people have been killed due to torrential rains and hailstorm in northern and north-eastern districts of Bihar yesterday. The House stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the departed.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a meeting with his senior Cabinet colleagues at Parliament House. The meeting came in the wake of suicide of a farmer during Aam Aadmi Party rally in the national capital yesterday. It is believed that during the meeting, Home Minister Rajnath Singh briefed the Prime Minister about the sad incident. Union Ministers Arun Jaitely, Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari were present during the meet.
