Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reiterated that the path to making India self-reliant lies in embracing Swadeshi. Addressing the 126th episode of his Mann Ki Baat programme on Akashvani, he appealed to citizens to celebrate the upcoming festive season by buying locally made products and adopting the mantra of Vocal for Local.

The Prime Minister urged people to take a pledge to support Indian industries by choosing products manufactured in the country. He also underlined that cleanliness drives during festivals should extend beyond homes to include neighborhoods, markets, and villages.

Referring to Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Mr. Modi recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s emphasis on Swadeshi and Khadi. He noted that in the past 11 years, the demand and popularity of Khadi have grown remarkably across the country.

Highlighting women’s achievements, the Prime Minister praised Indian daughters for excelling in diverse fields, from sports and business to education and science. He cited the example of two Indian Navy officers, Lieutenant Commander Dilna and Lieutenant Commander Roopa, who circumnavigated the globe as part of Navika Sagar Parikrama, staying at sea for eight months. The officers described the experience as “once in a lifetime.”

Turning to upcoming celebrations, Mr. Modi said this year’s Vijayadashami holds added importance as it coincides with the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He described the RSS journey of the last hundred years as “extraordinary, inspiring, and unprecedented.”

The episode also paid homage to several national figures. Mr. Modi remembered freedom fighter Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary, calling him an eternal inspiration for India’s youth. He also paid rich tributes to legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, noting that her songs stirred human emotions and her patriotic renditions continue to inspire the nation. He recalled that Mangeshkar admired Veer Savarkar, whom she fondly called Tatya.

The Prime Minister further expressed grief over the recent demise of eminent Kannada author and thinker Dr. S. L. Bhyrappa, stating that his works would continue to guide future generations. He added that translations of his writings are available for readers across the country.
