Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha jointly inaugurated Unit 1 of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant and dedicated it to the nation today.

Speaking on the occasion through video conferencing, the Prime Minister said Kundankulum 1 is an important addition to India’s continuing efforts to scale up production of clean energy.

He said nuclear plant collaboration is a highlight of friendship between India and Russia and both countries plan to build a series of nuclear power plants.

He saluted the team of engineers in India and Russia for their relentless work.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated everyone associated with the Kudankulam nuclear power plant through video conferencing. He said it is a part of the privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha said the nuclear plant is a monument to the friendship between India and Russia. She said the fears and concerns of citizens were allayed by a dedicated committee set up by Tamil Nadu.

The first unit of Kudankulam nuclear power plant attained criticality in July 2013. Till now more than 10,800 million units of power has been generated from the first unit.

The 1000 Mega watt nuclear power plant was built with Russian expertise following a pact between the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Soviet leader Mikahil Gorbachev in November 1988.
