In a statement here, he asked the Maharashtra government and Union Home Ministry to coordinate their efforts and resources to relentlessly pursue the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
“Those responsible for the act must be brought to justice quickly”, he said.
Dr. Singh sought the cooperation of all the citizens in this effort. Dr. Singh said that he understands the shock and outrage of people of Mumbai and shares their pain and anguish which was hit by serial blasts on Wednesday. Dr. Singh assured the people that the perpetrators of the blasts shall be subject to the rule of law that they have sought to subvert.
Dr. Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi were in Mumbai to express solidarity with the people and extend the deepest condolences and sympathies to those who have suffered in this terrible tragedy. The Prime Minister asked the Maharashtra government to ensure that all support is provided to the affected families so that they can overcome to tragedy and rebuild their lives.
The prime minister and the Congress president met Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Home Minister R R Patil and top government officials in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Domestic Airport to review the steps taken for security in the city after the blasts. The prime minister and the Congress president also visited the victims injured in the blasts at different hospitals and inquired about their health.
Dr. Singh has already announced an ex-gratia payment of two lakh rupees to the next of the kin of those killed and one lakh rupees to those injured.
