Indian equity markets ended higher for the second consecutive session on Friday, buoyed by strong gains in information technology majors, encouraging corporate earnings, and supportive macroeconomic indicators. Benchmark indices advanced despite weakness in the broader market, as investors selectively accumulated large-cap stocks while keeping a close watch on the September quarter earnings season, global inflation trends, crude oil prices, and geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
The rally was led primarily by heavyweight technology stocks after better-than-expected earnings from leading IT companies reassured investors about the sector’s resilience amid an uncertain global economic environment. Strength in telecom giant Bharti Airtel also added momentum to frontline indices.
At the closing bell, the BSE Sensex surged 413.66 points, or 0.56%, to settle at 74,729.27, while the NSE Nifty50 gained 148.80 points, or 0.65%, to close at 23,146.15. Significantly, the Nifty reclaimed the psychologically important 23,100 mark, reflecting renewed investor confidence after recent volatility.
Over the last two trading sessions, the market has witnessed a meaningful recovery, with the Sensex rising nearly 2.7% and the Nifty gaining more than 2.3%. Market participants attributed the rebound to robust institutional buying, stabilization in bond markets, and optimism surrounding quarterly earnings announcements.
IT Majors Drive Market Higher
Technology shares emerged as the strongest contributors to Friday’s gains, helping offset weakness in several domestic-facing sectors.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) rose nearly 5%, while Infosys gained over 4.6%, following positive investor sentiment towards the IT sector after earnings updates signalled continued demand for digital transformation, cloud migration and enterprise technology services.
Bharti Airtel, another major index constituent, climbed 2.75%, providing additional support to benchmark indices.
Investors appeared encouraged by management commentary from leading IT firms, which suggested improving deal pipelines and greater visibility on technology spending despite persistent macroeconomic uncertainties in key international markets.
Market analysts believe that after an extended period of underperformance, the IT pack is again emerging as a preferred sector due to attractive valuations, stable cash flows and expectations of stronger growth as global interest-rate concerns gradually moderate.
Broader Markets Remain Cautious
While benchmark indices witnessed a healthy advance, broader market participation remained mixed.
The Nifty MidCap 150 Index slipped 0.09%, whereas the Nifty SmallCap 250 Index managed a marginal gain of 0.06%.
The divergence indicates that investors continue to favor quality large-cap stocks over riskier broader-market counters amid elevated geopolitical risks and concerns regarding global economic growth.
Nevertheless, overall market breadth remained positive. On the BSE, around 2,404 stocks advanced, compared with 1,962 declines, while 263 shares remained unchanged, suggesting that buying interest was reasonably widespread despite the underperformance of certain midcap and smallcap pockets.
India’s External Position Strengthens
A major macroeconomic highlight supporting investor sentiment was the sharp improvement in India’s balance of payments position.
According to data released by the Reserve Bank of India, the country’s balance of payments recorded a substantial surplus of $45.4 billion in August 2026, compared with a deficit of $5.6 billion during the corresponding period last year.
The data also showed a narrowing of the current account deficit to $5.2 billion, down from $6.1 billion a year earlier.
The improvement was driven by stronger exports and rising services earnings. Merchandise exports increased significantly to $44.7 billion, while net services receipts rose to $16.5 billion, underscoring the strength of India’s services-led growth model.
Economists note that the improvement in external balances provides a cushion against global volatility, supports currency stability and strengthens the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals at a time when many emerging markets face external pressure.
Rupee Extends Winning Streak
The Indian rupee strengthened for the sixth consecutive trading session, reflecting improved capital flows and supportive macroeconomic indicators.
The domestic currency traded around 94.93 against the US dollar, compared with the previous close of 94.99.
A stronger rupee helped improve investor sentiment and partially offset concerns over elevated crude oil prices, which remain one of the biggest risks to India’s inflation and external account outlook.
The appreciation was also supported by the broad weakness in the US dollar index, which declined 0.42% to 101.62.
Bond Market Signals Stability
Domestic bond markets also offered encouraging signals, with the yield on India’s benchmark 10-year government security easing to around 7.365% from 7.389% in the previous session.
The decline in yields suggests expectations of improved liquidity conditions and reduced concerns over immediate inflationary pressures.
Lower bond yields are generally viewed as supportive for equity valuations, particularly in sectors such as technology and financial services.
Gold Gains; Oil Remains Elevated
In commodity markets, gold continued to attract safe-haven demand amid persistent geopolitical uncertainty.
MCX Gold futures for December delivery climbed 0.62% to ₹1.48 lakh per 10 grams, reflecting both domestic and global investor caution.
Meanwhile, oil prices remained elevated despite a modest decline during the session. Brent crude futures eased about 0.24% to $105.67 per barrel, after briefly moving above $106.
The energy market remains highly sensitive to developments in the Middle East, particularly tensions involving Iran and the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.
Analysts warn that sustained crude prices above $100 per barrel could reignite inflation pressures, increase India’s import bill and complicate monetary policy decisions.
Global Markets Focus on Inflation and Geopolitics
International markets provided a supportive backdrop for equities.
Most European indices traded higher as easing bond yields encouraged risk-taking. However, investors remained cautious due to persistent inflation concerns, elevated interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty.
Asian markets largely ended in positive territory after Wall Street recovered from earlier losses. Nevertheless, Indonesia’s stock market witnessed a dramatic sell-off, with the Jakarta Composite Index tumbling more than 11% after reports that MSCI was considering downgrading the country’s market classification, raising concerns over capital outflows.
In the United States, major indices closed higher overnight. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.08%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also ended in positive territory.
The rebound came despite fresh inflation concerns after US producer prices increased more than expected in September. Elevated energy prices continue to pose challenges for the Federal Reserve as investors debate the future path of interest rates.
Markets are also closely monitoring tensions between the United States and Iran, including sanctions measures and developments around shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz, which could have implications for global energy supplies.
Earnings Season Generates Stock-Specific Action
The ongoing corporate earnings season created significant movement across individual stocks.
Tech Mahindra Jumps on Strong Profit Growth
Tech Mahindra emerged as one of the session’s biggest gainers, soaring 8.48% after reporting a robust 32.7% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit for the September quarter.
The company also posted healthy revenue growth, reinforcing optimism regarding the recovery potential of India’s IT services sector.
Wipro Advances Despite Profit Dip
Wipro gained nearly 6%, even though its quarterly profit declined marginally year-on-year. Investors appeared encouraged by stronger revenues and management’s confidence regarding future growth prospects.
Cyient DLM Slides
In contrast, Cyient DLM fell sharply by more than 12%, despite reporting revenue and profit growth. Market participants appeared concerned about valuation levels and the sustainability of earnings after adjusting for one-time gains.
PC Jeweller Surges
PC Jeweller rallied nearly 12% following a bulk deal in which investor Aditya Kumar Halwasiya acquired a substantial quantity of shares, boosting investor confidence in the company’s prospects.
Pharma and Industrial Stocks Shine
Solara Active Pharma Sciences gained over 9% after returning to profitability during the quarter and reporting strong revenue growth.
Mahindra EPC Irrigation rose more than 6% after reporting a sharp turnaround in earnings, supported by rising revenues and improved operational performance.
Mixed Trends in Primary Market
Activity in the primary market remained vibrant, although subscription levels varied across issuances.
Tonbo Imaging India received the strongest response among ongoing public issues, with subscriptions reaching more than seven times the shares on offer.
Fusion CX also attracted healthy investor interest, securing subscriptions exceeding four times its issue size.
However, some offerings witnessed a relatively muted response. Zetwerk Manufacturing Business, Sahajanand Medical Technologies, and Bonfiglioli Transmissions remained either undersubscribed or only marginally covered by the close of the latest bidding session.
The divergent subscription trends suggest investors are becoming increasingly selective, focusing on valuation comfort, profitability visibility and sector-specific growth prospects.
Outlook: Earnings, Oil and Global Rates to Dictate Direction
Market experts believe the near-term trajectory of Indian equities will depend on three critical factors: the pace and quality of corporate earnings, movement in crude oil prices, and signals from major central banks regarding interest rates.
The resilience displayed by large-cap stocks, especially in technology, telecom and select financial counters, has helped improve market sentiment. However, elevated geopolitical tensions and persistent inflation concerns globally continue to pose risks.
With earnings season gathering momentum, investors are expected to remain stock-specific while monitoring macroeconomic developments at home and abroad. If corporate results continue to surprise positively and crude oil remains contained, Indian markets could extend their recovery in the coming weeks.
