TIA NEWS /
Cricketer-turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu today resigned from the BJP and Rajya Sabha. He is likely to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
There are speculations that the party may project him as AAP’s chief ministerial candidate. Sidhu handed over the resignation to the Rajya Sabha chairman in the afternoon. However, he has not resigned from the BJP primary membership.
Though a four-time MP, Sidhu was ignored at the recent rejig of ministers, where even some first-timers were made ministers.
Meanwhile, according to reports, Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu has also resigned as chief parliamentary secretary in Punjab. There are reports that the couple are joining the AAP in Delhi.
Sources said Sidhu had asked the BJP leadership to break away from Akalis in Punjab. While the BJP is sticking to the Akalis for now. Perhaps it was after judging the “situation” in Punjab that BJP president Amit Shah decided to leave the planning of the Punjab strategy to the “big brother” Akalis.
Sources in the BJP say Sidhu used his Rajya Sabha nomination to leverage a “better deal” with the AAP.
