Few days after a Muslim youth was denied a job on religious grounds, another row has erupted where in a 25-year-old Muslim woman in Mumbai has claimed that she was denied a flat just because of her religion. She said, the broker warned her not to shift to the apartment as it is the builder’s policy to not have Muslim tenants. Upset by the broker and builder’s continuous harassment to move out of the apartment, the lady left the flat a week after moving in and is presently staying at a paying guest accommodation in Bandra.
The Maharashtra government has said that it would probe the alleged case of housing discrimination. State Minority Affairs minister Eknath Khadse said that action would be taken against the guilty.
Meanwhile, a complaint has been lodged with the National Commission for Minorities, praying for an inquiry to ascertain whether the builder has a discriminatory policy against a religious community, which involves violation of the constitutional provisions. The incident also drew criticism from several other political leaders.
