Two leaders hold talks on sidelines of BRICS summit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Xiamen BRICS summit.
The meeting was first substantive and structured bilateral between the two leaders after Doklam standoff. Both sides expressed willingness to work together for mutual good. Mr Modi told Mr Xi that India and China are each other’s major neighbour and both the countries are world’s largest and emerging countries.
He congratulated Mr Xi for successful execution of Xiamen BRICS summit. Mr Xi told Prime Minister Modi that China is prepared to work with India seeking guidance from five principles of Panchsheel.
Chinese delegation comprised President Xi, Chief Spokesperson Lu Kang, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and State Councilor Yang Jiechi.
Prime Minister Modi was accompanied by National Security advisor Ajit Doval, foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, spokesperson of Ministry of foreign affairs Raveesh Kumar.
Meanwhile India has reiterated that peace and tranquility is pre-requisite for further development in bilateral relationship with China. Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar told media persons that bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Mr Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping was forward looking and constructive. He said meeting lasted about an hour.
Mr Jai Shankar said that Prime Minister Modi told Mr Xi that India and China are each other’s major neighbours and both the countries are world’s largest and emerging. He said, there should be stability in relationship between both the countries. He also said, both the countries do not allow to disagreements to become disputes.
It was the first substantive and structured bilateral between two leaders after Doklam standoff. The leaders recalled their Astana meeting and reaffirmed that disagreements should be resolved with mutual respect and confidence.
Prime Minister Modi was accompanied with National Security advisor Ajit Doval, foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, Indian Ambassador in China Vijay Gokhale and spokesperson of Ministry of foreign affairs Raveesh Kumar. Chinese delegation comprised President Mr. Xi, Chief Spokesperson Lu Kang, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and State Councilor Yang Jiechi.
