Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee took out a rally from her Kalighat residence here on Monday to protest the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district.

Holding a lit candle in her hand, Banerjee led the rally, in which MPs Dola Sen, Pratima Mondal and Derek O’Brien joined.

With several supporters of the TMC faction led by her taking part in the rally, Banerjee walked through Harish Chatterjee Street, on which her residence is located.

The participants in the rally held placards demanding justice for the victim girl and her family.

Abhishek Banerjee Alleges Police Blocked Protest March, Demands Swift Justice for Minor Assault Victim
Senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Monday condemned the alleged sexual assault of a minor girl in Baruipur, describing the incident as “barbaric” and calling for the strictest possible punishment for those responsible.

In a statement, Banerjee said he had planned to visit the victim’s family after learning about the case but claimed that police and central security personnel prevented him from leaving his residence. He said he later spoke to the family over the phone and assured them of his support.

Banerjee also alleged that police attempted to stop a peaceful candlelight march organised from Kalighat, in which Members of Parliament, MLAs and party workers participated to protest the incident and demand justice for the victim.

Criticising what he described as the suppression of democratic rights, the TMC leader accused the BJP-led administration in West Bengal of obstructing peaceful protests and failing to ensure women’s safety. He alleged that incidents of violence against women had increased under the present government and demanded immediate legal action to ensure a speedy trial and exemplary punishment for the accused.

Reaffirming his party’s commitment to the issue, Banerjee said the campaign for justice would continue until the perpetrators are brought to justice and women are guaranteed safety and dignity.
