The brainchild of the then Navi Mumbai Commissioner and now Maharashtra Director General, Information and Publicity, Mr Vijay Nahata, the project envisages betterment of persons and children with different abilities and to empower them to live life with dignity.
In fact, Navi Mumbai Corporation now adds a dynamic dimension of being the first corporation in the country to set up such a centre. It presently has 350 students enrolled with it besides 78 special professionals who include special educators, audiologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists besides social workers.
The award comprises Rs one lakh in cash, a medal and a scroll by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, who appreciated the very concept of starting such schools by the civic agency.
Mr Nahata later informed that the state government has already directed all corporations to initiate such a project and reserve three per cent of their funds for this. He said future plans include a special school for blind students and construction of a new building of well equipped ETC. According to project’s director, Ms Varsha Bhagat, the corporation has enhanced the budget for this project to Rs 10.60 crore in this fiscal.
