Romania’s Parliament has approved a new government led by independent Prime Minister Luca Niculescu, ending nearly six months of political deadlock.
The Cabinet today secured 280 votes in favour and 58 against. President Nicușor Dan nominated the 55-year-old diplomat and former journalist earlier this month, following three unsuccessful attempts to form a government.
Speaking after the vote, Mr Niculescu thanked lawmakers for their support and said his government would begin work immediately.
The political crisis began in May, when former Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan was ousted in a no-confidence motion. Romania has since faced prolonged instability, a high budget deficit, rising inflation and an economic recession.
The new minority government faces the challenge of reducing the budget deficit while supporting the economy.
