The Law Commission has invited “detailed submissions” from the stakeholders on the controversial issue of Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Last date of submission is April 6.
“Any individual/organisation (governmental or non-governmental) may send their submissions in the form of consultation /discussion/working papers, on any of the issues pertaining to uniform civil code (except the issue relating to triple talaq, which is pending before Parliament) to the Member Secretary, Law Commission of India,” the official circular of Law Panel said.
A questionnaire dated October 7, 2016, had got a response of 60,000 that was termed ‘overwhelming’ by the Law Commission, and it has invited a ‘detailed discussion’ as a result of the response from the stakeholders.
Uniform Civil Code is unifying personal laws to have one set of secular laws that will apply to all citizens irrespective of the religion. Personal laws include rules regarding marriage, property, divorce and so on according to one’s religion.
“Our whole attempt is we want to bring uniformity keeping the diversity in view. If we cannot bring uniformity… if we cannot bring in a composite form of uniform civil code, we must try to remove the discrimination. Laws may be different according to different religions but we must try our best to bring gender justice and remove discrimination,” Law Commission chairman justice B S Chauhan had said.
