Egged on by his Tamil Nadu team-mates from the sidelines, Aswin Ramesh staged a fine comeback to secure a split verdict over Mohammed Adnan (Uttar Pradesh) in the preliminary round of the over 80kg class boxing competition in the inaugural Khelo India School Games at the boxing hall in the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here this evening.
Adnan opened aggressively and appeared to have gained the edge over the Tamil Nadu pugilist after two rounds. The lanky lad from Coimbatore came up with tactics, using a southpaw’s stance every now and then, confounding his rival. He managed to deliver a standing count in the final round and a couple of jabs helped him get his nose ahead.
Three judges gave the bout to Aswin Ramesh. Two scored 29-28 in his favour and the third 30-27. The other two judges scored 29-28 in Adnan’s favour in a bout that held the attention of everyone packed in the boxing hall, not the least because it was the final bout of a long day in which referees had to stop nine bouts and one boxer threw in the towel before that stage was reached.
