muftiJammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed passed away in New Delhi this morning. The 79-year-old leader was admitted in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi for the past 15 days and was on ventilator.

The mortal remains of Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister were brought to Srinagar in a special aircraft. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and family members including Sayeed’s elder daughter and ruling PDP President and Member Parliament Mehbooba Mufti also reached Srinagar.

The mortal remains have been kept at Chief Minister’s official residence at high secured Gupkar Road in Srinagar. Party sources said Sayeed’s mortal remains would be kept for sometime at Gupkar residence to enable people to pay homage and have glimpse of the departed leader. Later today, he is likely to be buried at his ancestral place in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara town. The State government has announced a holiday today and a seven-day mourning period as a mark of respect to Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

An official order in this regard said that the flags atop buildings of constitutional authorities and state government establishments will fly at half-mast during the mourning period. National Flag will fly at Half Mast today in capitals of all states and Union Territories as a mark of respect to Sayeed. The Centre has also decided to accord State funeral to the departed leader.

Universities in the State and State Board of School Education (BOSE) have postponed examinations scheduled for today. It said all official functions of the state government scheduled for today have also been cancelled or postponed. Political parties of all hues have paid homage to Sayeed and described him an astute nationalist and visionary leader of the State.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to late Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister at Palam Airport. Vice President Hamid Ansari, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah reached the All India institute of Medical Sciences and paid their last respects to the departed leader.

Mr Sayeed was born in 1936 in Bijbehara in Jammu and Kashmir. He had previously served as Chief Minister from 2002 to 2005. He was also the Home Minister of India from December 1989 to November 1990. He had founded the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party in 1999.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has condoled the Passing away of J&K CM Shri Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

“Mufti Sahab’s demise leaves a huge void in the nation & in J&K, where his exemplary leadership had a major impact on people’s lives. RIP. What stood out about Mufti Sahab was his statesmanship. In his long political journey he won many admirers across the political spectrum. Mufti Sahab provided a healing touch to J&K through his leadership. He will be missed by all of us. Condolences to his family & supporters”, the Prime Minister said.
