Government of India is considering the proposal to accord minority Status to Jews in the country. The ministry of minority affairs has sent the proposal to the Prime Minister Office PMO for the consideration.

“If the proposal is accepted Jews will get minority status in the country”, said Minister of Minority affairs Najma Heptullah at press conference here today.

The local Jews had asked the government to grant them status of minority in the country.

There are nearly 5000 Jews in India.  Judaism was one of the first foreign religions to arrive in India as recorded in history.
India has a legacy of three distinct ancient Jewish groups: the Bene Israel, the Cochin Jews, also called the Malabar Jews, and the White Jews from Europe. Each group practiced important elements of Judaism and had active synagogues. The Sephardic rites predominate among Indian Jews.
