Japan’s Meteorological Agency urged people along the northern Pacific coast to remain vigilant for a possible mega quake after tremors were felt today. A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Aomori at a depth of 17 kilometres. Tsunami waves up to 20 centimetres were later observed in parts of Hokkaido and Aomori Prefectures. In Hokkaido and across much of the Tohoku region, the tremors reached an intensity of 4 on Japan’s seismic scale of zero to seven.
Later, another magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck north of Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake occurred in southern Ibaraki Prefecture and had a maximum intensity of 4 out of 7 on the Japanese scale. It registered an intensity of 3 in central Tokyo. Tokyo Electric Power Company reported that no abnormalities were detected at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini nuclear plants.
