Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw today flagged off the extended Srinagar–Jammu Vande Bharat Express from Jammu Tawi Railway Station, marking a major boost to rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.
The train, which earlier operated between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, will now run up to Jammu Tawi. Regular services on the extended route are set to begin शनिवार.
With the extension, the train will now operate with 20 coaches instead of eight, significantly increasing passenger capacity and comfort. The upgraded service will enable commuters to travel between Jammu and Srinagar in under five hours, offering a faster and more seamless journey across the region.
Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah were also present at the flag-off ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Ashwini Vaishnaw said the railway sector has undergone significant transformation over the past twelve years. He added that since the abrogation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed sustained development and improved infrastructure.
He noted that the increase in coaches from 8 to 20 was necessitated by rising passenger demand.
The Minister also recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat service in June last year, which has since been used by over 5.5 lakh passengers.
Boost for Pilgrimage and Tourism
The extension is expected to benefit pilgrims traveling to the Vaishno Devi shrine as well as those undertaking the Amarnath Yatra. The direct rail link reduces the need for interchanges, making journeys more convenient and efficient.
Since its launch, the train has reportedly been running at full capacity, reflecting strong passenger demand and growing reliance on rail connectivity in the region.

On the return journey:

The total journey time is approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes.
