Indian Union Muslim League IUML has expressed concern over the central move to declare the triple talaq illegal. It said that Modi govt was looking to rake up the common civil code debate to cover up its failures.
Kerala IUML chief Panakkad Syed Hyder Ali Shihab Thangal said the affidavit filed by the Centre in the Supreme Court was an insult to Constitution.
“Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulema secretary Kottumala TM Bappu Musaliar said the affidavit was an affront to religious freedom in the country. “Instead of addressing basic issues, the govt is showing undue haste in meddling with such contentious issues. One should note that the Constitution guarantees freedom of faith.
“He said Muslim leaders had earlier pointed out that Section 44 of the directive principles went against the basic tenets of the Constitution. Madavoor faction of Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen saw the “fascist agenda” of the Sangh Parivar at work. “Campaign that divorce and polygamy are rampant among Muslims is baseless.
