In Italy, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced a sweeping coronavirus quarantine today, restricting the movements of at least 16 million people in 14 provinces until April 3. The Prime Minister signed the decree that will restrict the movement of people in and out of these territories and also within the same territory.
He said exceptions will be allowed only for proven professional needs, exceptional cases and health issues. The new measures, will also apply to the financial centre Milan and tourist hotspot Venice. The dramatic escalation in the country’s efforts to contain the new coronavirus will close gyms, pools, museums and ski resorts.
Wedding and funerals are also suspended under the mandatory quarantine. Italy is Europe’s worst-hit country and reported a steep rise in virus infections yesterday. The death toll in Italy has passed 230, with officials reporting more than 50 deaths in 24 hours. The number of confirmed cases jumped by more than 1,200 to 5,883 yesterday.
