An Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Lok Sabha Speaker, Mrs. Sumitra Mahajan is in Geneva to attend the 139th IPU Assembly.
The Delegation attended the meeting of the Asia Pacific Geo Political Group of IPU in which India is a member on 14 October 2018. Discussions were held on a wide range of issues pertaining to the Group and also those having a bearing on the IPU. Lok Sabha Speaker proactively participated in the Group deliberations.
A Coordination meeting of Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) was also held on the sidelines of IPU Assembly. Mr. Anil Y. Desai, Member of Parliament, represented the Indian delegation in the Coordination Meeting. Desai, who is the President of the Third Standing Committee of IPU, also attended the meeting of the Presidents of the Standing Committees of the IPU. The meeting was chaired by the IPU President of IPU Ms. Gabriela Cuevas Barron.
Two Members of the Delegation viz. Ms. Heena Vijaykumar Gavit, MP and Mrs. Pratyusha Rajeshwari Singh, MP also participated in the various meetings of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians today. While attending the meetings, the Members spoke on issues of present day interest such as – Women on the move: Protection from trafficking and all forms of violence and Migrant women: Inclusion, work and rights in host countries.
They dwelt upon in detail about Gender equality in science and technology.
The speeches of both the Members were very well received by the delegates attending the Assembly.
