India has reiterated its offer to put its commitment to not being the first to use nuclear weapons and not to use them against non-nuclear weapon states into a multilateral legal agreement. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee in New York, Congress MP Manish Tewari said India remains committed to universal, non-discriminatory and verifiable nuclear disarmament through a multilateral framework.
Tewari reaffirmed India’s policy of credible minimum deterrence, No First Use and non-use of nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states. He also reiterated India’s voluntary moratorium on nuclear testing. Addressing emerging technological challenges, Tewari stressed that decisions on the use of nuclear weapons must remain under human control, highlighting concerns over the integration of artificial intelligence into nuclear command and control systems. He also reiterated India’s longstanding proposals to reduce nuclear danger, including de-alerting nuclear weapons and negotiating an international convention prohibiting their use or threat of use.
