Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New Delhi on Friday to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit, with India highlighting its longstanding civilisational ties with Iran and their shared commitment to progress and prosperity.

Pezeshkian was received at the airport by Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. In a post on X, the MEA said India and Iran share strong cultural and people-to-people ties and are working together as BRICS partners to contribute to shared progress and prosperity.

Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit. Before leaving Tehran, the Iranian President said BRICS could play an important role in countering unilateralism and addressing challenges facing the global economic order.

He said economic, financial, industrial and trade issues would feature prominently at the summit. Pezeshkian also pointed to BRICS financial mechanisms as a means of facilitating economic transactions among member and partner countries while reducing dependence on the US dollar.

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13 under its 2026 chairship, guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The grouping has emerged as a key platform for cooperation among major emerging economies and for advancing the interests of the Global South.
