India today said it expects Maldives government to resume political process with immediate effect and not seek extension of the state of emergency.
The emergency declared in the Maldives on the 5th of this month comes to an end this evening.
External Affairs Ministry said in a release that after the revocation of Emergency, democratic institutions, including the judiciary, should be allowed to function independently and in a fair and transparent manner in accordance with the Constitution.
New Delhi said the order issued by Maldives Supreme Court on the first of this month should be implemented in letter and spirit.
India said it is important that Maldives quickly returns to the path of democracy and the rule of law so that the aspirations of Maldivian people are met and the concerns of the international community are assuaged.
