Stressing that the United Nations must do more to send the right message to terrorist groups, India has told the world body that inconsistent implementation of sanctions on some of these terrorist eats away at the UN’s authority.
Participating in a debate on situation in Afghanistan at the UN General Assembly, India’s permanent representative Syed Akbaruddin said the leader of the Taliban – a proscribed entity – needs to be designated as a terrorist individual.
India’s strong view on inaction on part of the UN against terrorist leaders comes at a time when New Delhi’s application for blacklisting Jaish-e-Mohammad Chief Maulana Masood Azhar is pending with the UN committee since China has put a technical hold on it.
Coming to situation in Afghanistan, Mr Akbaruddin said groups and individuals that perpetrate violence against the people and the Government of Afghanistan operate from shadowlands entirely outside the fabric of international law.
He said the shadowy supporters of some of the terrorist organisations like the Taliban, Haqqani Network, ISIS, Al-Qaeda and its designated affiliates such as Lashkar-eToiba and the Jaish-e-Mohammed have not been deterred, as is reflected in the upwards trend in the toll of casualties.
