Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said India plans to increase its port capacity fourfold by 2047 to support economic growth and expanding international trade.
Speaking in Rotterdam during his visit to the Netherlands, Mr Goyal said, India had doubled its port capacity over the past decade and aims to quadruple it over the next two decades. He highlighted opportunities for cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands in maritime infrastructure, green energy, carbon capture and sustainable trade.
The Minister emphasised the importance of cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam in modernising existing ports, developing world-class infrastructure and improving operational efficiency. Highlighting the government’s Sagarmala initiative, the Minister said efforts were underway to expand port infrastructure and improve maritime connectivity.
The Minister expressed confidence that stronger cooperation with major international maritime hubs such as Rotterdam would help India expand its maritime capabilities and strengthen its role in global trade.
Describing India as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, Mr Goyal said the country had made significant progress in quality, efficiency and productivity, strengthening its position in global trade and logistics.
