The iconic beaches in Tamil Nadu have been opened for tourists from today. They were earlier closed following the Covid-19 restrictions by the end of March this year. The beaches that have started welcoming the visitors today include the Marina Beach in Chennai and Mamallapuram, popularly known as Mahabalipuram. The development comes in the wake of the improvements in the Covid-19 situation in the state.
Our Chennai correspondent reports that the iconic Marina Beach in Chennai, the country’s longest natural sandy urban beach and one of the world’s longest, remained as a popular avenue for the lakhs of people in the city and the tens of thousands of tourists to visit leisurely and spend quality time. Similarly, the historic Mamallapuram Beach used to entertain an average of about 50-thousand tourists a day, which sometimes goes up to 1.5 lakh during weekends and holidays. They were all declared out of bounds for tourists in March this year due to the pandemic. Now, they have begun welcoming the visitors again, as the average daily Covid infections have come down to a little over a thousand. However, number restrictions have been imposed in Mamallapuram for the time being. The reopening of the beaches signifies the gradual removal of all the remaining restrictions in the days to come.
